So, as many of you may already know, I work at my local cinema and I have to say, it’s a pretty cool job! One of the many perks of working in a cinema is that you get to see lots of movies, ‘The Greatest Showman’ was a movie I’d been super excited to see since I saw the teaser trailer in mid 2017. When it finally hit the big screen here in the UK (December 26th) you can bet I was the first one in the queue!
I am a HUGE lover of musical theatre (I’m sure I’ve mentioned before?!) which also means I’m quite partial to a good ole’ movie musical. I was so glad that ‘The Greatest Showman’ lived up to, and might I even say, exceeded expectations of anticipating audiences across the globe. I absolutely LOVED this movie! So much so, that it has actually surpassed my all time favourite, Beauty and the Beast as my new favourite movie.
The Greatest Showman tells the story of PT Barnum and how he came to invent show business as we now know it. With a star-studded cast, phenomenal sets and costume design and 2 of the best composers to ever grace the musical theatre world, and really, just the world in general, this movie was sure to become the success it has.
Hugh Jackman plays PT Barnum who promises his wife Charity (Michelle Williams) a grand and fulfilling life. After losing his job at a shipping company, Barnum applies for a bank loan and buys ‘Barnum’s Museum Of Curiosities’ which is filled with typical museum artefacts and wax figures. It is only when his daughters Caroline and Helen (Austyn Johnson, Cameron Seely) convince him that his museum needs something more alive that he sets out to find ‘oddities’ which is how he comes across his circus acts including The Bearded Lady (Keala Settle) Tom Thumb (Sam Humphreys) a Trapeze artist (Zendaya) and also leads to his partnership with a young playwright, Phillip Carlyle (Zac Efron)
Now, I won’t say much more about the film as I don’t want to give much of the plot away, but, if you haven’t already seen this movie, I urge you to immediately! I will say however, that possibly the best part of the film is it’s soundtrack, written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (the masterminds behind La La Land, Dear Evan Hansen and SMASH) you will not be able to get these songs out of your head! I have had the soundtrack on repeat since it was released and haven’t yet got bored of any of the songs. In fact, there isn’t a single track that you might find yourself skipping, they’re all so damn likeable! All in all I couldn’t get enough of this movie! ‘The Greatest Showman’ has taken the world by storm and upon seeing it, it’s not very hard to see why!
